McCracken’s Tours List

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Jim’s only in his second season of cycling but he knows no limits. Thanks to Jim for this list of tours around the Northwest. Many are from the Cascade Bicycle Club on the coast. It’s kind of nice to see them on a calendar page so I’ve included them on the calendar page unless everyone objects. There are links there as well in the details for each tour. Jim sent them out as a word document which you can download on the calendar page.

Jim include Pedal Around a Glacier, eh which he says takes place probably the second week of September. The date hasn’t been picked yet.

And of course don’t forget to plan in our own tour to Joseph. We rode that in September rather than early October this year. People seemed to like that.

You’d better get to pedaling. –Corrie

I told you about the Oregon Bicycle Ride yesterday. I just got my confirmations. Linda and I are in. But you’re not. They sold out in only a week. Washington Bicycle Ride is still open though.

Oregon Bicycle Ride 2008 Itinerary

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Jim McCracken showed up for the New Year’s Day ride and of course our conversation turned to long rides and tours. Linda and I have already sent in our checks for The Oregon Bicycl Ride. But you might be interested in their Washington Bicycle Ride which goes north to Colville from Spokane and back along the Pend Oreille river. We did it with them last year in the reverse direction. Beautiful country and little travel time and expense to get there. This is a great organiziation with many extras. –Corrie

Oregon Bicycle Ride 2008 Itinerary
Tour of Southwest Oregon

August 10 - 16, 2008

OBR presents a brand new route which provides a true sampling of all southern Oregon has to offer. Beginning in Cottage Grove, we’ll ride through pristine old growth forests, tree farms, river valleys and estuaries. Our travels will take us along the scenic coastline, follow the Coquille River past several waterfalls and finish in the rolling grassy hills of the southern Willamette Valley. The route includes some fantastic overnight locations in small towns and rarely traveled scenic roads. Click to view map.

The ultimate top 10 list of “Top 10″ bicycling lists

Monday, December 31st, 2007
Gene Bisbee at Biking Bis has brought together a number of top 10 lists. I’m sure Linda will find hours of time exploring the 10 ten tours. And the fact that the San Juans appear on that list means I’m going to hear about it for the first month of the new year.

Everybody likes Top 10 lists. It gets us thinking about a topic and wondering why some items were picked over others.

For instance, Seattle often lands on “best cities to bicycle” lists, but has yet to show up on the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly Communities list.

Anyway, here is my Top 10 collection of “Top 10″ bicycling lists over a range of topics — best bicycling cities, best bicycle rides in cities, best bike stores, best ways to avoid being hit by a car, etc., etc. It’s all very unscientific, but the decision of the judges is final.

Across the Country in 25 days

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

I post this knowing its likely to start Steve itching again. And Doug and Jim too. This group is becoming more touring friendly than I feel comfortable with. Oh, well, at least Linda hasn’t started lobbying for a cross country trip.–Corrie

Across the Country in 25 days

from Nantucket’s Inquirer and Mirror

After training in the mountains of Maine, Hank Varona hopped on his 1978 10-speed Peugeot bicycle in Jacksonville, Fla. and headed west in late October. It took the Nantucket resident only 25 days to ride 2,359 total miles from Florida to Ramona, Calif. on the 30-year-old bike. He rode over 100 miles per day for 15 of the 25 days.
Along his ride people would as him why he was doing it.

“No reason. I figure I might as well do it while I can. You never know when you are not going to be able to do something like that,” said Varona, who turns 54 on Saturday.
