Sleep-pedaling and rescues by snow-bikers at Iditarod

Most of the snow-bike riders in the Human-Powered Iditarod have trickled into McGrath, the 350-mile checkpoint for those on the way to Nome and the end of the ride for about a dozen.

The latest cyclist to roll into the small town on the banks of the Kuskokwim River Saturday afternoon was Jill Homer, the author of the Up in Alaska blog. She completed the trip in 6 days, 2 hours and 20 minutes.

You’ve heard of dog sledding in Alaska, but did you know this was going on right now?–Corrie

Four-legged bane of Trans-American bicycle tourers? Dogs. Four-legged bane of Iditarod snow bikers? Moose.

The Human-powered Iditarod got underway in 10-degree temperatures on Sunday, and racers snow-biking the route have reported problems with moose along the trail, especially one particularly aggressive female moose.

Meanwhile, Jill Homer, whose Up in Alaska blog is one of the most popular bicycling blogs on the Internet, is posting good enough times to be on pace for a record-setting 350-mile ride into McGrath.

Preview of the Road Race at the Beijing Olympics

Remember the brutal conditions for the bicycle road race at the Athens Olympics in 2004? Searing heat had competitors dropping like flies as the riders wound their way through Athens for over five and a half hours. But current opinion from teams who have scoped the course that riders will face Beijing this summerat the 2008 Summer Olympic Games is that the Beijing route will make Athens seem like a cakewalk, as it is widely considered one of the most challenging in Olympic history.

A Guide to Individual Events in Olympic Track Bicycle Racing

Going back more than 100 years, track bike racing has long enjoyed a passionate following since the first world championships were held in 1895. That tradition continues in the 2008 Olympics, which offers a total of ten different track racing events, the most of any of the cycling disciplines.

Devil’s Slide Registration Open

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Well, at least I have pdf’s of the entry form and the flier live on the Devil’s Slide page.

Lot’s more work to do yet. Lance will get the fliers and posters printed and I’ll get those fliers in the mail–probably by the end of next week. We’ll need to figure out how to get fliers and posters distributed. That’ll be easy in the valley, but in the banana belt we only hear terrifying things about the roads on the Palouse.

So, if you’re a racer check out the registration information and even if you are not a racer, consider looking it over to spot those inevitable mistakes and oversights that I have made. Chandler, you usually do a good job of catching my mistakes.

Devil’s Slide Task List Update

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

I’ve integrated Joe’s and Carol’s items into one list. I’m not really certain I understand everything on the list but it is a start. I think we need to establish some time lines. How soon do we need to arrange for the park? With NORBA? How many forms do we need?

But the list is better organized now, I think.

Melbourne Cycle Race Crash

Monday, December 24th, 2007
I saw this on CBS news a couple of nights ago. Perhaps you did too, but the video is worth seeing again. No serilous injuries, though. Amazing.–Corrie
A CYCLIST who came within centimetres of serious injury in a spectacular crash was back on his bike yesterday shrugging off jarred bones, deep cuts and a swollen jaw.

Bendigo rider Jamie Crass, the Oceania junior road champion, catapulted into the air and landed on a railing in a crash which collected 14 of the 17 cyclists in a Future Stars race for Australia’s best under-18 talent on Wednesday night at Vodafone Arena.

On the other side of the railing was a deep stairwell, — and maybe death — but Crass somehow stayed on the right side of the rail, falling back on the track and surviving to tell the story.Read that story here.

Devil’s Slide Director Needed!

Friday, December 21st, 2007
Devil’s Slide Director Needed!

Devil’s Slide is the club’s only USA sanctioned event. It is a mountain bike race at Hell’s Gate State Park south of Lewiston. Rider’s say it is an excellent course. Over the years running the race has fallen on Joe Wagenbrenner of MAMBA.

Joe has resigned and will be out of town January through February and MAMBA feels they should stay focused on trail building and promotion.. Sadly, that means he won’t be able to help anyone taking over. It is likely that the race will have to be cancelled for 2008.

The prospects aren’t good within the club for finding a director. This makes it look unlikely the race will resume under our auspices. We would like to see it continue with or without us. We are prepared to lend a hand in future editions or continue to sponsor it ourselves if we can find a director.

We appreciate your past participation as well as current interest and suppport. Please send comments, thoughts, and applications to trcboard@twinriverscyclists.org.

Indoor Cross Training for Improved Climbing

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Just in case you can get out on a bike . . . Indoor Cross Training for Improved Climbing

Climbs like this can be made easier with preparation indoors.

By Edmund R. Burke, Ph.D.
For Active.com

While speaking at a recent training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, an off-road cyclist wanted to know if working out on a stair climber would be a good cross-training tool to exercise on during the off-season.

I was quick to tell him that a key training concept for athletes to remember is specificity of training. In other words, if you want to be a swimmer, swim; if you want to be a runner, run; and if you want to be a good climber in cycling then climb on your bike.

What Is Cyclocross?

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Maybe you were wondering just what it is that Ted and Alison have been racing recently?

You may find this and other Fiedler pieces on the News page under the About.com feed.

What Is Cyclocross?

David Fiedler’s Bicycling Blog
From David Fiedler,
Your Guide to Bicycling.

What Is Cyclocross?

Ever hear of Cyclocross? A good description is a bike race mixed with steeplechase. In cyclocross, riders race laps around a short course that usually features some pavement, some dirt, some woods, some steep hills and for good measure, some obstacles thrown in that require riders to dismount, work their way through and then get back on and ride some more.
