Biking and building across the US

by Gene Bisbee at 09:26AM (PST) on January 15, 2008  |  Permanent Link  |  Cosmos

If you’re interested in riding in a charity bike ride, but not this one, check you the list of Charity Bicycle Rides for 2008

Ride your bike. Hammer. Repeat.

No, this isn’t a crude way to maintain your bicycle. It will be the routine for bicycle riders in seven “Bike & Build” cross-country tours this summer.

Participants in the Bike and Build Program collect donations before setting out and ride in groups of about 30. The routes cross 42 states. On days that they’re not pedaling an average of 75 miles, they’re building affordable housing.

Charity Bicycle Rides 2008

Want to ride for a reason this year? There are hundreds of major bike rides sponsored by big health foundations throughout the US where the top goal is fund-raising, often through a system of pledges for participating bicyclists.

While the individual bike rides are too numerous to mention — the MS150 sponsors about 100 events — here are short descriptions and links to the major sponors. The bicycle ride series include Multiple Sclerosis, Leukemia, Lung, Diabetes, and LiveStrong bike tours. Others, such as the AIDS Lifecycle and Pan Mass Challenge sponsor one event.  Here, in no particular order, are some of them:

Thanks to everyone who took up my link challenge to raise money for the flood victims along the route of the 200-mile Seattle-to-Portland bike ride.

I pledged to donate $5 for every blog that linked to a story I did about the Cascade Bicycle Club’s flood relief drive for residents of Chehalis, Centralia and surrounding Lewis County. With 11 links, the grand total was $55. With a surprise matching grant from Ms. BikingBis, that’s $110. (Overall, the flood relief drive has raised $23,500 as of Thursday morning.)

Seattle bicycle riders have no desire for more streetcar tracks in the curb lanes where they ride. The newly laid tracks of a streetcar line along Westlake Avenue linking Westlake Center to the Hutch Cancer Center have caused numerous accidents already when bike tires get stuck in the groove, causing the rider to loose balance and fall.

Too late to organize this this year. Sounds like a Nicky project anyway.

Thanksgiving is November 22nd in the U.S. this year, and that means Cranksgiving just around the corner. What is Cranksgiving you ask? Mix a food drive for a local charity with a fun bike ride or alleycat race, depending on where it takes place, and add a bit of color and mischief, and you’ve got Cranksgiving.
Riders get a list of items to be purchased at designated stores around town, and off they go. They buy the goods and bring them back. Past that, there aren’t many rules!
Read more about Cranksgiving and where one of these charity food rides might be happening near you.

Zen and the Art of Fixing a Flat Tire

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

When it is too cold to ride, at least you can’t get a flat.

Zen and the Art of Fixing a Flat Tire

You are riding on a picturesque country road on your bicycle with the wind in your hair and birds singing in the nearby trees, and you are about to reach a Zen-like state of rapture when you start noticing your rear wheel. It seems to be bumping on the ground. Gradually, you realize that you have a flat.

Read this and other bits of wisdom on the humor page from Ken Kifer’s Bike Pages.

Transportation Secretary on bike paths

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

You may have heard this one . . . bike paths are part of the infra structure problem that caused that Minnesota bridge to collapse. The Transportation secretary has since retracted the idea if not the words.

Transportation Secretary Mary Peters talks about infrastructure problems and travel initiatives.Peters cited “bicycle paths” as a prime example of the waste

Ragbrai ban in Crawford County Iowa

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007
Crawford county was sued by a cyclist’s widow for failing to maintain the road. The response: ban future large group rides.
Law suits have repercussions as well as poor road maintenance. Can a government ban citizens from congregating? http://www.bikingbis.com/blog/_archives/2007/10/12/3286050.html

This week’s resolution to ban RAGBRAI bike rides from Crawford County’s roads could set a precedent that might be felt across Iowa.
