Weekend Rides

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

With my foot on the mend, I’m beginning to think ahead to rides. I did 10 on Saturda, 16, on Sunday and 21 miles on Tuesday. I’m not ready to try much distance yet or even any heavy climbing, but Linda’s Easy Does It Ride on Saturday morning 10 am at the Clarkston Corps parking lot might be just the thing. I’ll probably ride down, do the ride, and ride home. That might give me 30 miles. Look for us between Clarkston and Asotin.

Last Sunday the club ride was packed. It’s great to see so many people out, but when they turned toward Lindsay Creek, I had to beg off. I didn’t even know if I could ride Evan’s Road. Turns out I had no problem, but I’m still glad I didn’t try to do Lindsay Creek with the Crazies–no, no the ladies, the Death Valley crew playing chase.

I’ll show up again Sunday at 1pm even though it is Easter, right? I’m not Catholic enough to know for sure but there seem to be noises to that effect. We had a great “flat” ride last year on Easter so I’m hoping some of you will show up.

crazy ladies

Not only did Linda and Carol stage a coup on the board taking over in the name of women everywhere, they are taking over the pages on this site too.

Two new pages not yet in the menu system yet but you can click on the Shamrock icon at the top of the page to get to them.

The Safety committee comrpised of Linda, Carol, Debbie, Tamra, and Jen have built a couple of pages on the google group list. I’ve just made them look like they are on our site. These pages are a work in progress and members of the google list can join in the conversation.

The Crazy Ladies have been around longer than  the Twinriverscyclists. Sometimes they are members of the club and sometimes not, but they ride every Wednesday morning and have created a calendar which is now shared with ours. Visit their page and look for their events on our calendar. Largent is a past honorary Crazy Lady and I’ve ridden with them now and then so fellows, you can show up too.

Annual Spaghetti Feed

And

Membership Drive

March 13, 20l08

6:30 pm

United Methodist Church of Clarkston

1242 Highland

Clarkston, WA

 Corner of 13th and Highland

Annual memberships run from March 31st to March 31st each year. You could download a registration form and send us your check, but where’s the fun in that? Come join us for a celebration of the last year in cycling and a look at where we are going for the next year.

If you are a Ridership Award winner, you definitely want to come pick up your cash prize. Looks like this may have been a one time event, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t dreaming up new ideas to get you on your bike. Thanks for this one go to Mike and Nicky.

Devil’s Slide appears to be a go. 3We have Pete as our Official and the forms have all been filied. Now we just have to find a few good men and women who want to crash down Devil’s Slide.

Awards! Awards and more Awards. You might get one even if you don’t want it.

New direction. If you didn’t already know, Linda talked Carol into standing for president. Linda also managed to con the board into creating a new position of Safety Officer and appointing Linda to the job. But the Ladies’ Coup doesnn’t stop there. New member, Jen Cunningham, comes to us with a recreation background, experience working with cycling clubs elsewhere and enough ideas to keep Linda, Carol, and Tamra busy. You need to come just to protect yourselves from the new wave of women wanting to govern. Oh, Hiliary, what have you done?

Shameless Editorial:

Actually, the club needs a direction. If we’re just a bunch of old folks who like to get together to ride, why do we need a club? Well, the food. There is that. But I think when you pay your membership even when you seldom show up for rides, you must be expecting to support the idea of cycling. Linda’s pushing the idea of cycling safety as a way to increase awareness of cycling in the community.

It’s a good focus. I’m doing my part by signing up for the Road I course offered by the League of American Cyclists in Spokane in May. You can read about it on the front page of the club site at http://twinriverscyclists.org.

Sleep-pedaling and rescues by snow-bikers at Iditarod

by Gene Bisbee at 10:45PM (PST) on March 1, 2008  |  Permanent Link  |  Cosmos

Most of the snow-bike riders in the Human-Powered Iditarod have trickled into McGrath, the 350-mile checkpoint for those on the way to Nome and the end of the ride for about a dozen.

The latest cyclist to roll into the small town on the banks of the Kuskokwim River Saturday afternoon was Jill Homer, the author of the Up in Alaska blog. She completed the trip in 6 days, 2 hours and 20 minutes.

New Rides on the Calendar

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

We’ve posted most of the major rides for the year including the Huckleberry ride. Joseph will be in September again this year but the date hasn’t been fixed yet. I’ll let you know when it is.

The calendar actually is a couple fo calendars shown as one. On the TRC calendar, I’ve posted only club rides. On my own Corrie’s calendar I’ve added a number of the major rides around the northwest. Thanks to Jim for gathering them up into a single list making it easy for me to add them. If you want to see only club rides, though, just click on the selector arrow to the right of the agenda button and uncheck the calendars you don’t wish to see displayed.

In addition, we’ll be discussing rides on the google group list (you should join it by clicking subscribe over on the left side of this page). When those rides are firmed up, I’ll put them on the calendar too.

June 7 This came to me today. I thought it merited posting.

“Marilyn Jensen Memorial Bike Rides” is an annual event to honor my wife who was killed on her bicycle near Weston, OR August 10th 2005.

I sponsor a free ride, during a local celebration, on June 7th. It is free, and supported, two rides, an 8 mile “family ride” and 50 mile loop, with all kinds of terrain.

The celebration is called “Pioneer Picnic” and there’re lots of fun and food.

This year is the 116th year for the picnic. For details, contact me, Gary Jensen, PO Box 15, Weston, OR 97886.

Lewiston is 125 miles from Weston, I went to college there in 1955/1956. gary jensen

Linda’s Easy Does It Rides

Linda leads three rides staying mainly on the bike path starting at the Clarkston Corps of Engineers Parking Lot. These are slow paced and meant to encourage newcomers. Three Saturdays: March 22nd Aprl 19th May 24th Be ready to ride at 10 am.

Spring Tune Up Ride

March 16th Sunday 1pm start at Southway Boat Launch. This is part of our regular Sunday 1pm rides, but if you come between 12 and 1, Sean Ellis of B&L bikes will perform a basic triage for your bike–chain stretched, cogs worn, head set loose, spokes loose, tires thin. He’s not going to fix your bike, but he’ll give you a heads up about when to head to the bike shop.

Bi-annual Litter Pickup March 30th 1 pm Dippel Road

Okay, I know its not a ride, but it doesn’t take long, gives you a warm funny civic feeling, improves motor/bike relations, and we usually do sneak in 20-30 miles.

Litter Pickup

And don’t forget the Spaghetti Feed membership drive. Ridership awards, Roken Spoke, Pied Biker, Humanitarian, Best New Ride, No Wine awards presentation. March 13th and Clarkston’s Methodist Church on 13th and Highland. Bring a friend and A-M salad/N-Z dessert

Human Powered Iditarod

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

You’ve heard of dog sledding in Alaska, but did you know this was going on right now?–Corrie

Four-legged bane of Trans-American bicycle tourers? Dogs. Four-legged bane of Iditarod snow bikers? Moose.

The Human-powered Iditarod got underway in 10-degree temperatures on Sunday, and racers snow-biking the route have reported problems with moose along the trail, especially one particularly aggressive female moose.

Meanwhile, Jill Homer, whose Up in Alaska blog is one of the most popular bicycling blogs on the Internet, is posting good enough times to be on pace for a record-setting 350-mile ride into McGrath.

Washington Bicycle Ride Calendar

I guess this won’t be the year I try the Chilly Hilly Ride on Feb. 24th. Doug and I will be just back from four days of Death Valley cycling and camping. The high temps forecast for Stovepipe Wells are 81 for the time we’ll be there. Doug says we have some high passes to cross so bring warm clothes. I’m bringing sun screen too, thank you. I know that Chandler was asking about anyone going to Chilly Hilly–you’ll have to talk to him ’cause I’m going to be acclimated to warm weather by Feb. 24th. So there.–Corrie

Lapwai Loop

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Saturday at 8 am from the Southway boat launch

Accuweather says the temps are going to be mid 40s for the day and no chance of rain while Weather.com says light rain all day long. If Weather.com is right, I won’t be at the boat launch. You’ll know ’cause it’ll be raining.

I haven’t done anything longer than 35 miles for some time and I’d like to get out a bit further. Lapwai is about 57 miles looping from the boat launch. It usually take 3.5 hours plus some for a rest stop in Lapwai. I’d like to be back in town by noon.

Wish I could promise better weather, but I’m willing to take a shot at it.–Corrie

Fight against cancer inspires young bicyclists’ coast-to-coast journey

Hopkins 4K for Cancer has its roots in Hickory

Ride 4,000 miles? On a bike? All the way across the United States?

If your dream is fighting cancer, a bike ride from Baltimore to San Francisco is not just the right thing to do with your summer, it’s a full-time passion. That’s how Clare Blubaugh feels about it, and she’s not alone.

Blubaugh, 22, from Hickory and a senior at Johns Hopkins University, is director of this year’s Hopkins 4K for Cancer, a 4,000-mile, two-month bicycle trek from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco from May 22 to July 30.

On the ride, Blubaugh joins a team of 25 students, including 16 men and nine women, ages 18 to 26, from seven colleges and universities. Blubaugh and another teammate will make the trek for a second time.

Devil’s Slide Registration Open

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Well, at least I have pdf’s of the entry form and the flier live on the Devil’s Slide page.

Lot’s more work to do yet. Lance will get the fliers and posters printed and I’ll get those fliers in the mail–probably by the end of next week. We’ll need to figure out how to get fliers and posters distributed. That’ll be easy in the valley, but in the banana belt we only hear terrifying things about the roads on the Palouse.

So, if you’re a racer check out the registration information and even if you are not a racer, consider looking it over to spot those inevitable mistakes and oversights that I have made. Chandler, you usually do a good job of catching my mistakes.
