A streak cyclist, or a streak athlete for that matter, is someone who rides every day trying to string together as many consecutive days of riding as possible. And, even in cycling’s earliest days (photo) it wasn’t uncommon for riders to track their mileage trying to better their peers or top their previous year’s effort, witness Karl Kron’s book published in 1887, Ten Thousand Miles on a Bicycle (a highwheel bicycle, too!).Read the rest of the story |

In RoadBikeRider.com Newsletter No. 69, Coach Fred Matheny gave some pointers to Judy D., who wrote about her lack of success keeping feet warm on cold rides.
“I’ve tried every trick imaginable,” Judy said. “Larger shoes with two pairs of socks, battery-powered socks, spray deodorant to reduce sweating, plastic bags to cut wind — but no luck. My frozen feet are always the limiting factor in winter riding.”
A pack of RBR roadies came sprinting to the rescue with solutions that work for them — and may work for Judy and you, too!

93-year-old fitness guru — Jack LaLanne
by Gene Bisbee at 10:05AM (PST) on November 5, 2007 | Permanent Link | CosmosBefore Chris Carmichael started advising Lance Armstrong or we had the Scarsdale or South Beach diets, people watched Jack LaLanne on TV to learn about diet and exercise. Here’s what the 93-year-old is saying now:
“Exercise is king. Nutrition is queen. Together, you’ve got a kingdom. If you have a Corvette, you don’t put water in the tank. The human machine deserves the same treatment. No cake, pies, ice cream, soda. Your hair is out of shape. Your skin is terrible. Your elimination is bad. The wrong fuel in the human machine does that. …
“Would you give your dog a cup of coffee and a doughnut?”

Jim Langley provides tips on bicycle repair from the quick release to repacking your bearings. Wrench
One of the coolest things about bicycles is that they’re darn
easy to fix; fun to fix, too. Everything’s right there, easy to see and figure out. With basic hand tools you might already have around the house, you can make many common repairs. Just by riding the bike, you can usually diagnose problems. And, with a little practice, even advanced bicycle repair such as wheelbuilding is well within your reach… continued

Doug sends this techie article along for those of us who may have heaerd campagnola parts are superior to Shimano. My Bianchi came with campy parts and I thought they were durable, but then I discovered I needed a new drive train. I had worn the chain and the cassette together.
So Campy, Shiimano? Change your chain or your drive train? Whew, confusing. I think I’ll go for a ride.
Now I try to change my chain when it gets stretched. That way I’m only buying a new chain. Scott Whitely, on the other hand, chooses to ride the same chain all year and then replace the entire drive train.
Campagnolo vs. Shimano
Words and images by: Kraig WillettOriginally written for bike.com and appeared on Wednesday, September 5, 2001
The debate has raged for decades about which brand is superior in the bicycle component group manufacturing business. Shimano and Campagnolo make component groups that provide the same basic functionality to a bicycle – transmission, steering, and braking systems. However, each company has several different priced offerings available. In short order, the whole component selection process gets complicated leaving the consumer wondering ‘Why Campagnolo’, or, ‘what exactly am I paying for when I buy Dura Ace instead of Ultegra’? It must be remembered, however, that they are simply bike parts and if consumers stick to these two companies, they will rarely be disappointed.

What Is Cyclocross?
Ever hear of Cyclocross? A good description is a bike race mixed with steeplechase. In cyclocross, riders race laps around a short course that usually features some pavement, some dirt, some woods, some steep hills and for good measure, some obstacles thrown in that require riders to dismount, work their way through and then get back on and ride some more.

Cycling just got friendlier in Seattle. After news of the cyclist shot on Thursday with BBs, I was worried. I still might not drive in Seattle, but when they have 295 miles of bike friendly arterial and 230 miles of signed roadway, I’ll consider biking there.

Steve’s second newsletter article about cycling history in Lewiston. You’ll need to click on the The rest of the Story. This is in pdf.
Early bicycle enthusiast Samuel Edgar “Ed” Arant operated a bicycle shop at Fifth Street at the rear of the old Weisgerber building that preceded the present structure- back when Lewiston’s post office was on the corner of Main and Fifth. His 1939 obituary says, “through his efforts the (bicycle) craze that swept through the country in the early 1890’s became manifest in Lewiston.
